The African bush elephant

The African bush elephant is one of the 10th most endangered animals in the world. That's because there are many mammals, like lions or crocodiles, that attack the small elephants. Humans are the elephant's major predator. They hunt them.

There are two different species of this animal. It's herbivourious, it eats plants. It eats a lot, because it's very big, it normally reaches between six or seven metres long, and weighs between 6000 to 9000 kg. This intelligent animal is the base of many human experiments about animal behaviour.

These elephants are endangered basically because people hunt them for their meat, skin, bones and tusks. Elephant trophy hunting increased in the 19th and 20th centuries. People hunted millions of elephants. It continues today. Scientists estimated that, if no protective measures were taken, the wild elephant would be extinct by 1995.

How can we protect this animal? It's very easy. These elephants are very important. What we need to do to protect them is stop hunting at all, and then there would be more elephants. It's easy to do. Why don't we do it? Let's start it!
